D Magazine - November 2003
I was delighted to find how little Newport’s has changed since it opened 20 years ago as the first fine-dining restaurant in the revival of Dallas’ historic West End. Although the ice-packed display of fresh fish has disappeared and oysters are no longer on the menu, the concept remains as viable and vital as ever. Seafood is flown in daily from both coasts.
Under the direction of Salvador Soto, preparation, especially from the mesquite grill, has been honed to a fine standard.

Except for my guest, who suffered enough beef (and corn) for several lifetimes during her Midwestern childhood, I would have been tempted to try the center-cut, prime-aged strip steak. But choosing from the imaginative selection of affordable sautéed, grilled, or steamed seafood reminded me why I used to go to Newport’s so frequently.

The light curry of the tropical fruit aioli on the side of an appetizer of two crab cakes worked well with the supporting field greens. Plump escargot with portobello pieces and small cubes of feta cheese arrived in a soppable white wine sauce. Clean, firm, perfectly grilled sea bass was simply excellent. The herb-crusted salmon special was tender and properly moist at its center. Finally, a deep-dish Key lime pie brought Florida to Dallas.

The setting—terraced dining levels and the rails of the wooden bar overlooking the vast, brick-lined artesian well of the original brewery—equals the food as an attraction to this well-sustained business. As long as we have Newport’s, we’ll never be completely landlocked. The Brewery, 703 McKinney Ave. 214-954-0220. $$-$$$. —Robert Fox
